What does compostable mean?

Compost is organic material that can be used to help grow plants and keep soil healthy.

Our compostable products will break down in a commercial compost facility where they compost municipal solid waste, yard waste or mixed municipal solid waste.

To ensure that our products are compostable, we get them tested and certified to meet the ASTM standards for composting by the Biodegradable Products Institute (BPI). BPI uses scientifically based standards to determine if a product is compostable in a commercial facility in a specific time frame – usually within 180 days. Learn More...

*Zilchables® products are intended to be composted in a municipal or commercial composting facility which may or may not be available in your community or state. To find out if you have access to commercial composting, visit findacomposter.com

What are Zilchables® made out of?

Our cutlery is made from a plant-based biopolymer known as PLA (polylactic acid). PLA performs much like traditional plastics, but with the crucial benefit of being compostable in commercial compost facilities.

Unlike traditional plasticware, Zilchables® are made from 100% renewable resources—like corn—instead of oil. These crops grow back again every year, unlike oil which is nonrenewable. Learn More...

We pulp the stalks and combine them with a little bit of water to make a slurry. Then we pump the slurry into molds to form the plates. Learn More...
