Our cutlery is made from a plant-based biopolymer known as PLA (polylactic acid). PLA performs much like traditional plastics, but with the crucial benefit of being compostable in commercial compost facilities.
Unlike traditional plasticware, Zilchables® makes products from 100% renewable resources—like corn—instead of oil. These crops grow back again every year, unlike oil which is nonrenewable.
Just like us, you probably want to know how Ingeo™ is made. Ingeo™ is made from dextrose (sugar) that is derived from corn or other cellulosic plant starches.
The largest producer of PLA today is a company called NatureWorks®. According to NatureWorks®, right now...
- We use less than 1/20th of 1% (0.05%) of the annual global corn crop today, so there's little to no impact on food prices or supply.
- The process does not require corn, we only need a sugar source. This could include sugar beets, sugarcane, wheat and more.
The End of Life for Ingeo™
Ingeo™is made from renewable plant materials. It is also BPI certified compostable – that means you can compost these products in commercial compost facilities when you are done with them. This is a great end-of-life alternative to the landfill for single-use items like our cups and cutlery.
Wheat Straw Pulp
Our plates have a double green story, because not only are they made from a renewable resource, they're actually made from a reclaimed renewable resource. Learn More...
